Armed Forces Medical College, Pune (AFMC)
Established in 1948 by an Act of Parliament, AFMC is amongst the Top Medical Institute of India, managed by the Indian Armed Forces and ranked second best medical college of the country after AIIMS. Armed Forces Medical College is a premier medical institute of India acknowledged as a centre of excellence for education and research. The college provides training to under-graduate and post-graduate medical and nursing students with assured career prospects in the defence services.
AFMC is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and is recognised by MCI.
Set up in the immediate post-world war period, AFMC forms the backbone of high quality professional medical care being provided to the Armed Forces. AFMC has multiple roles to perform. These are primarily training of medical undergraduates and postgraduates, dental postgraduates, nursing cadets and paramedical staff. With the first batch of MBBS doctors passing out in 1966, over 6000 doctors have graduated from AFMC till date. AFMC is responsible for providing the entire pool of specialists and super specialists to Armed Forces by giving them in service training; it also works as a hospital for civilians. With 29 departments at present, AFMC, affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and recognized by the Medical Council of India conducts MBBS and post graduate courses in many disciplines. 89 training courses are offered under the stewardship of 285 highly qualified and accomplished members of faculty at AFMC and affiliated teaching hospitals. Affiliated hospitals include Command Hospital, Military Hospital, Artificial Limb Centre and Military Hospital. Patient care forms an integral part of the training curriculum and the affiliated hospitals utilize the expertise available at AFMC. The college is also involved in conducting research in various medical subjects as well as those aspects which would affect the morale and performance of the Armed Forces both in war and peace. Armed Forces Medical Research Committee (AFMRC ) takes up service oriented projects and also conducts research in clinical and laboratory subjects. The Nursing College wing of AFMC conducts a four years course for B.Sc. (Nursing) and a condensed two years course for post certificate . More than 1000 nursing officers have distinguished themselves through dedicated service in India and abroad in UN peace keeping missions. Students are encouraged to participate in sports and pursue extra-academic interests, competitions, conferences, quiz contests, etc. AFMC is the only medical college in India where tuition, lodging and boarding expenses are borne by the Government.
