We have compiled here lot of information on the top Law Colleges in Punjab, the number of seats available, their admission process etc.

  1. Department of Law, Panjab University, Chandigarh

    The department of law was originally established in Lahore in 1889 and relocated at the University Campus at Chandigarh in 1959. Three Chief Justices of India and large no of Chief Justices of High Courts and many civil servants are alumni of Dept of Law, Punjab University.

     

    Punjab University is among the top universities in India and also among the oldest universities in India. In a recent survey in 2013, Punjab University was ranked 226 in the World university ranking and was the highest among the Indian Universities. The University has 188 affiliated colleges and 3 regional centers.

     

    The Law Department offers LLB and LLM and PhD in Law

    LLB: It is a 3 year course and there are 431 seats.
    Graduates in any discipline with a min 45% are eligible for LLB.

    Admission to LLB: Admission to LLB Course shall be on the basis of an Entrance Test. Total marks for determining merit is 200. 50% of 200 (100 marks for the entrance test) 50% of 200 (100 marks for the qualifying exam.)

     

    LLM: It is a 2 year course and there are 46 seats.
    A person who has passed LLB  or equivalent degree is eligible to join the first
    semester class of the LL.M. Course :-
    Admission to LLM : Admission to LL.M. Semester - It shall be on the basis of an Entrance Test. Total marks for determining merit would be 200 :- 50% of 200 (100 marks for the entrance test)
    50% of 200 (100 marks for the qualifying exam.)

     

    University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University offer BA LLB (120 seats)and B Com LLB (60 seat) 5 year integrated course. For admissions 50% weight age is given to entrance exam (conducted by Punjab University) and 50% weight age is given to marks in the qualifying examination.

     

     

  2. Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala

    Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, was established by the State Legislature of Punjab by passing the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab Act, 2006

    The University acquired approval of the Bar Council of India (BCI) in July 2006. The University also got registered with the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 and has been declared fit to obtain grant from the (UGC) under Section 12-B of the UGC Act, 1956.

    RGNUL is also a member of a number of professional organizations of national and international stature like the Asian Law Institute (ASLI), Singapore; Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA); Forum of South Asian Clinical Law Teachers (FSACLT), Goa; Indian Economic Association (IEA); Indian Institute of Comparative Law (IICL), Jaipur; Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), New Delhi; Indian Law Institute (ILI), New Delhi; Indian Political Science Association (IPSA); Indian Society of Criminology (ISC), Madras; Indian Society of International Law (ISIL), New Delhi; Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies (ICPS), New Delhi; International Association of Law Schools (IALS), and International Law Students Association (ILSA), United States of America

     

    The RGNUL offers BA LLB  and LLM Courses.

     BA LLB : It is a 5 years course and the admissions are made through CLAT and students in any stream after 12th are eligible for admission. There are 120 seats.

    LLM: It is a 1 year course and RGNUL offers 1 year LLM with specialization in Business Law. Consttutional Law, Criminal Law and International Law. The admissions are made through CLAT and the students must have passed LLB / B L Degree to be eligible for admission.

    RGNUL also offers  Research Degree Programme PhD in Law and PhD in Social Sciences with Law.

     

    RGNUL also has IGNOU’s School of Law on its premises. Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in various fields of law are offered here. These courses are undertaken under the Distance education Programmes, being run through the Programme Study Centre of IGNOU School of  law. These are: Post Graduate Certificate Programme in Cyber Laws (PGCCL), PG Certificate Programme in Patent Practice (PGCCP), Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights (PGDIPR), Certificate Programme in Consumer Protection (CPP), Certificate Programme in Human Rights (CHR), PG Diploma in Legal Process Outsourcing (PGDLPO)-Online. The two other

    programmes are Masters in Intellectual Property Law (MIPL),Online and Diploma in Paralegal Practice (DIPP)

     

  3. Department of Law, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar

    BCI Approved.  GNDU was established at Amritsar on November 24,1969 to mark the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is both a residential and an affiliating university. 

    Courses Offered: LLB  and LLM

    There are 100 seats in LLB   and 40 seats in LLM.

    Admission to LLB course is made on the basis of State Level Common Entrance Test and admission to LLM course will be made based on merit of the candidate in the qualifying examination.

    Punjabi University Patiala, is one of the premier institutions of higher education in the north of India. The University has a modern well planned campus located about seven kilometers from the Patiala city

  5. Army Institute of Law, Mohali

    BCI Approved, Affiliated to Punjabi University

    The institute was established in July 1999 under AWES at Patiala. Now it has a campus in Mohali.  The Institute runs BA LLB  5-year degree course in law, primarily for the wards of servicemen and ex-servicemen of Army. 20 percent of the total number of seats is available to wards of civilians. Out of this, 15 percent are reserved for residents of Punjab and 5 percent for those resident in the rest of India. The Institute is affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala and approved by the Bar Council of India.

     

    BA LLB is a 5 year degree course and students in any stream in class 12th are eligible for the course.

    Admission: As per the Government of Punjab notification vide letter No. 13/10/10-6Edu.1/51993 dated 15th May 2013, the Punjab University, Chandigarh will coordinate the admission to B.A., LL.B. (5 Year Course) with Army Institute of Law, Mohali.

    Admission to 64 seats (60 seats of Wards of Army Personal and 4 seats of All India General

    Category) will be filled through a Written Entrance Test followed by counseling at AIL, Mohali.

    Admission to 16 seats of Punjab residents Civil Category will be filled by Army Institute of Law,

    Mohali on the basis of 10+2 merit as per Punjab Govt Notification.

     

  6. Rayat College of Law, On Ropar Jalandhar Highway, Railmajra

    Near Ropar,  Dist Nawanshahr

    The college is housed in an independent building at Rayat Technologies campus, Near Ropar. The college was established in 2004 and is affiliated to Punjabi University Patiala.
