NDA and NA
National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Exam is conducted by UPSC two times every year for admission to Army, Navy and Airforce. The exam is held once in April and once in September. entrance exam after 12th. The course duration is 5 years after 12th and students can opt for this specialization at the end of two years in the course. A very distinctive feature of the programme is the involvement of the Engineering, Sciences and Management faculties in offering innovative courses in collaboration with the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.The programme imparts substantial knowledge of Indian economy, literature, philosophy, culture, society, and public policy. It provides opportunities for learning a foreign language. Currently German, French and Chinese are offered.
Applications and Intake in the course
Applications can be made online on UPSC website. The intake varies every year depending on the vacancies in the forces. NDA 2017 (1) is being held for 390 vacancies. 208 vacancies in Army, 55 in Navy and 72 in Airforce. Additionally there are 55 vacancies for cadet entry scheme in Naval Academy.
Eligibility conditions:-
Only unmarried male candidates with maximum age limit of 19 years are eligible. For Army wing of NDA students from all streams with English as a subject are eligible.Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.
For Airforce and Navy wings of NDA and Naval Academy students with physics, and mathematics in class 12th are only eligible.
NDA and Naval Academy Exam Pattern
NDA Exam is a written exam and there are two sections in it. The paper is in English and Hindi both. Paper one is Mathematics which is 2 and half hour duration and carries 300 marks. The paper 2 is General Ability Test of two and half hours and carries 600 marks. Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers. The test is followed by and SSB Test / Interview which carries 900 marks.
What after the exam
Successful candidates appear before a Services Selection Board for Intelligence and Personality Test where candidates for the Army/Navy wings of the NDA and 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme of Indian Naval Academy are assessed on Officers Potentiality and those for the Air Force in Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) and Pilot Aptitude Test (which forms the whole PAB Test) and for Officers Potentiality. PABT applicable to candidates with Air Force as First choice would also be conducted for all SSB qualified candidates with one of the choice as Air Force subject to their eligibility and if they are so willing.
To be acceptable, candidates for the Army/Navy/Naval Academy and Air Force should secure the minimum qualifying marks separately in (i) Written examination as fixed by the Commission at their discretion and (ii) Officer Potentiality Test as fixed by the Services Selection Board at their discretion. Over and above candidates for the Air Force, and all the SSB qualified candidates as per their willingness, eligibility and preference for Air Force, should separately qualify the PABT
SYLLABUS OF THE EXAMINATION
Paper 1 : Algebra , matrices and Determinants, Trignometry, Analytical Geometry, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability.
Paper 2: General ability Test has two parts. Part A is English and Part B is General Knowledge which broadly covers Physics, chemistry, General Science, Social STudies, Geography and current events
