What will you study in a BFA course

 

If there is an artist in you or if you want to make a career around various forms of art then fine arts is a very good course. Fine arts is the making and study of visual arts. The curriculum usually helps the student to choose and build a career around his or her interest.

Let us look at the course structure of BFA program offered by Delhi College of Art (College is under the Faculty of Music & Fine Art, University of Delhi, for all academic matters and wholly administrated by the Govt. of NCT of Delhi) . The college offers advanced training in Visual Art (Creative and Applied) leading to the Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) Degree of the University of Delhi, further providing advance training in Master in Fine Art course (except Art History) in (a) Applied Art (b) Art History (c) Painting (d) Printmaking (e) Sculpture and (f) Visual Communication.

In the BFA course the first year is the foundation course which is common for all specializations. The foundation year exposes students to Drawing, Color, Clay modeling, Printing, Geometry & Perspective, materials and tools and exercises in form, aesthetics and concepts, all of which are designed to promote visual and textural sensitivity, formal perception and manual neat handedness. History and Appreciation of art is also taught as a compulsory subject for all.

In the BFA course the students can specialize in Painting, Sculpture, Applied Art, Art History, Print Making and Visual Communication.

In Painting specialization the 3 year course covers Drawing & Painting Still life, study from life (Portrait and Full-figure and Outdoor). Composition with emphasis on the creative process from the concept to the finished art work and subsidiary subjects of Printmaking, Mural and Weaving as Practical subjects, and Aesthetics, History of Art and Method & Materials as Theory papers can be studied.

In sculpture specialization the 3 year course covers Study from life, Composition, Wood Carving/Stone carving, Ceramics, Assemblage in Practical subjects and Aesthetics, History of Art, and Methods & Material as Theory papers.

In applied art specialization one takes up courses like  Drawing & Illustration, Lettering & Typography, Design and Subsidiary subjects such as Silk-screen, Offset, Lithography, Photography, Computer Graphics, Packaging and Display Design as Practical subjects, and Aesthetics, History of Art and Advertising Profession and Practice as Theory papers.

In Print making specialization which is a 4 year course the aim is to enhance each student potential as a creative artist through the use of printmaking. The student is also exposed to the opportunity of benefiting from new materials, techniques and cultivating discipline in work. 

One can also specialize in Visual Communication which is again a 4 year course that trains students in various forms of visual media and latest multimedia software applications. The course structure include copy writing, screen play/script writing and computer graphics, in addition to the foundation course in Painting, Applied Arts and Sculpting, which enhances the overall creative skills of the student. Conceptualization of theme and visualization for various media, Compositions, Perspective, cartooning and Photography etc will equip students to take up new technology driven creative opportunities of visual communication media. 

Another very good institute JJ school of applied Art, Mumbai also offers BFA. The BFA course is of 5 years duration. The specialization program starts from the second year onwards and students can choose elective subjects like

a) Lettering and Typography,

b) Illustration,

c) Photography,

d) Computer Graphics,

e) Exhibition, Design and Display & Stage Craft

The third year student has to select any elective which they study along with communication design. Intake is 20 students per elective.

After doing a BFA course you can get placement in the field of communication design in corporate, animation field, with advertising agencies and publishing houses.
